When We Meet

Meetings are held at Aunty Sophie se Kombuis, 1 Noordwal Wes Street, Die Laan, Stellenbosch, 18:00 for 18:30 on the first and third Tuesday of every month. We look forward to meeting you.

At our recent Rotary Club of Stellenbosch Induction Ceremony, we celebrated a significant evening of leadership transition, recognition, and new beginnings.
Outgoing President Stuart Hunter graciously handed over the presidential chain of office to incoming President Laurence Chambers. In his address, Laurence thanked Stuart for his dedication and steady leadership over the past two Rotary years and outlined his vision for the year ahead, inspired by the Rotary theme "Unite for Good."
One of the evening’s highlights was the induction of our newest member, Julie Streicher, who was warmly welcomed into the Rotary Club of Stellenbosch by President Laurence.
The evening also saw the presentation of two prestigious Paul Harris Fellow awards to Rotarians Stuart Hunter and Jackie Hunter, in recognition of their outstanding service and commitment to Rotary ideals in re-constituting our Rotary Club of Stellenbosch.
As a final tribute, Stuart Hunter presented the Rotarian of the Year Award to Club Secretary Monique Labat for her continued dedication and contribution to the smooth running of the Club.
Club President Laurence announced the new Board made up of Chris van der Leij, Jackie Hunter, John Whall, John Whitehead, Monique Labat, Stuart Hunter.

Supporting Education! A New School Model at APEX Education
One of Rotary International's areas of focus and goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education and increase adult literacy.
At Club President Stuart Hunter's last Rotary meeting as current Club President, Rotarian Prof. Francesco Petruccione invited CEO of APEX Education, Jana Du Plooy to share how South Africa can blend the best of teachers and technology to provide high-quality schools at the lowest possible cost and fees!
APEX Schools aims for an education that nurtures the capabilities needed for further studies, employment and ultimately, lives that the learners have reason to value advised Jana Du Plooy.
APEX Schools are data-driven and continually monitor an extensive range of measures, with learning outcomes as the primary focus.
Most notably, in 2023 and 2024, APEX Schools' Grade 9 learners surpassed the school and provincial averages for both Language and Mathematics in the external provincial assessments. These learners also exceeded the Quintile 5 average, that is the high-fee schools in language, an exceptional achievement!
This presentation drew Stellenbosch's leaders in education and our biggest number of visitors to our Club meeting.
Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, Prof. Prathieka Naidoo, Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Process Engineering and SARChI Research Chair in Green Hydrogen Integration and Transition at Stellenbosch University, entrepreneurs, business owners, students and postgrad students and members of the Rotaract Club of Stellenbosch based at the University as well as school learners. We also had the pleasure of hosting Club President Elenore Baicocchi from the Rotary Club of Strand.

Vocational Service is 1 of 5 avenues of service of Rotary International which emphasises the importance of ethical standards and using one's professional skills to address community needs.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to apply their expertise to make a positive impact by mentoring and participating in projects that leverage their vocational skills.
This is exactly what our Rotarian Jennifer van den Dool is doing at Citizen Leader Lab Leaders for Education!
Citizen Leader Lab Leaders for Education is a mentoring/coaching programme presented throughout South Africa. They approached our Rotary Club of Stellenbosch (chartered in 1937), and Rotarian Jennifer van den Dool, who has vast business expertise and a masters in coaching, volunteered to assist and mentor a head of school.
The program is managed by The Citizen leadership Lab, who raise approximately R150 000 per school from donors, select suitable school heads (9 in the Winelands area), and match them with a mentor from business, the objective being to improve leadership skills.
The 12 Month programme includes weekly meetings between the mentor and the head, with additional bi-monthly training programmes, attended by the mentor and mentee, presented by The Citizen Leadership Lab and their partners. This initiative is sponsored by local businesses, such as Remgro, Mediclinic, Investec and others.
The Head of the school is required to set a personal goal he would like to focus on, for his personal development, and to select one project he wants assistance with for the school. The objective is to focus on ‘non brick and mortar projects’, rather focusing on personal development.
This project is a good fit for Rotary given that the mission of Rotary is to provide service to others, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.
“Our School’ is Kyamandi Primary school, a no-fee school established in 2008, situated on the outskirts of Kyamandi. The School is housed in prefabricated buildings, with 41 members of staff and approximately 1 450 pupils. A isiXhosa school and children are taught in first language.

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Stellenbosch, we had the privilege of hosting Dr Yaseera Ismail from Stellenbosch University, who delivered a fascinating talk on a groundbreaking scientific achievement.
Dr Ismail, together with Professor Francesco Petruccione, played a leading role in establishing the world’s longest quantum-secure satellite communication link — a historic connection spanning 12,900 kilometres between South Africa and China.
This milestone marks a significant advancement in global cybersecurity and quantum technology, placing South Africa at the forefront of cutting-edge research.
